Lots of debate about this video. Personally, I think he’s identifying problems with institutions/hierarchies (and dare I say, patriarchy). Religion is one of those loaded words that people layer meaning onto based upon their experiences, and I think people equate religion with empty rituals, when what they are looking for is meaningful relationship grounded in faith. (This happens with evangelism, too.) It’s unfortunate that there are a) so many people who can readily agree with his assessments because of their own negative experiences with Institutions and b) that people are so defensive about their experiences that they can’t give this guy the space to work it out. (I’ve read some really scathing comments critique everything from his theology to his style.) Whether you agree with him or not, someone you know identifies with him.
